This season, Wolves face their biggest challenge to stay up since promotion.
Back then, Wolves were able to sign players like Joao Moutinho and Raul Jimenez.
That is simply not the case anymore.
All three promoted teams cannot keep going straight back down to the Championship forever.
Sides like Wolves, West Ham United and Brentford will all be looking over their shoulders.
With the West Midlands outfit having limited funds in terms of who they can bring in, exits are necessary to facilitate that.
It now appears as if one may be just around the corner.
According to Record Portugal, Gonçalo Guedes is set to sign for Real Sociedad.
However, their report does not state whether the deal will be a permanent one or a loan one.
It would be slightly strange on Wolves’ part to sanction a loan deal.
They are struggling for senior first team players at the moment.
To lose another one without bringing in a transfer fee would be risky squad planning.
As mentioned above, exits are necessary – but permanent ones.
It’s safe to say things have not worked out for Guedes since joining in the summer of 2022.
He signed from Valencia for nearly 30 million pounds, yet spent 18 months of his first two years out on loan.
Last season he played 29 league games in his only full season at the club so far.
That said, he only started ten of those games, and scored two goals.
Nevertheless, he was clearly a squad option throughout the campaign.
Vitor Pereira’s side have already lost one of those, as Pablo Sarabia on a free.
Which just reiterates the point that not getting a fee for Guedes renders any departure pointless.
Sometimes you just have to cut your losses. That, or keep him as a squad option again this year.
