It has been a difficult spell for Manchester United since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.
David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim have all been appointed as permanent United manager on a since the departure of Ferguson, but have all failed to bring back the glory days.
They may have won trophies, and finished as runners up in the league table, but they have failed to secure either of the big two in the Premier League or Champions League.
In total, they have won two FA Cups, two League Cups and a UEFA Europa League, but they have seen Liverpool win a Champions League, as well as two Premier Leagues that levelled them with United on English league titles.
Local rivals Manchester City have also now become the dominant force that United once were, adding seven Premier League titles to the one they stole off their neighbours in the 94th minute of the final game during Fergie’s penultimate season.
It has been a difficult seven days for United, with a 1-1 Premier League draw with Fulham followed up with a penalty shootout defeat to League Two Grimsby Town before Bruno Fernandes spared them their blushes at home to Burnley yesterday.
Their goalkeeping issues have also been magnified in the past 18 months.
André Onana’s struggles at United have been evidently clear, both in the Grimsby defeat and ever since his move from Inter Milan two summers ago.
His backup Altay Bayındır, was at fault for Arsenal’s goal in their opening weekend defeat to the North London side.
United have been linked with various goalkeepers this summer, and now appear to have found their guy between the sticks.
Manchester United finally have a new goalkeeper
According to reports, United have agreed personal terms with Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
United had been in talks with Royal Antwerp about their goalkeeper, Senne Lammens.
However, Martínez, who was one of the heroes of Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph, has been long linked with a move away from Villa, for whom he joined in 2020.
Martínez has gone on to win two back-t0-back Yashin Trophies in 2023 and 2024, a trophy handed to the best goalkeeper of the year at the annual Ballon d’Or ceremony.
United fans will hope that he can be the man to finally solve their aforementioned goalkeeper issues.
