Scott McTominay had a brilliant start to his Napoli career. He has capped off a remarkable debut season in Italy by finishing 18th in the 2025 Ballon d’Or rankings.
McTominay joined the Italian side last summer in a £25 million deal from Manchester United. The Red Devils deemed him surplus to requirements.
The ex-Manchester United man has made a major impact under Antonio Conte. Scott McTominay scored 13 goals in Serie A, helping Napoli secure their second Scudetto in three years.
Napoli’s Serie A victory last year was just the fourth league title in the club’s history. His performances earned him the Serie A Player of the Year award
McTominay has quickly become a fan favourite at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. Locals have even dubbed him “McFratm”. Now, his image has started to appear on murals across the city.
The Scottish international’s efforts have now been recognised on the global stage. Also, McTominay finished ahead of several high-profile names in the Ballon d’Or.
The Scotland midfielder finished above the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, and Declan Rice.
According to The Daily Record, McTominay has also created history at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.
The Scott became the 17th Scottish male footballer from his country ever to appear for the Ballon d’Or since 1987.
Scott McTominay joins an elite list that includes legends like Denis Law, Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Jimmy Johnstone, and Ally McCoist.
So far, Denis Law remains the only Ballon d’Or winner from Scotland. He won it taking the prize in 1964. Law went on to lift the European Cup with Manchester United four years later.
The Scotland international now enters the 2025–26 season as one of Napoli’s most important players. McTominay has already become a symbol of their recent domestic success.
