Ruben Amorim has given his reaction to the T-shirt worn by Kobbie Mainoo’s half-brother during Manchester United’s 4-4 draw with Bournemouth.
Love Island star Jordan Mainoo-Hames was spotted in the stands at Old Trafford wearing a “Free Kobbie Mainoo” shirt.
It was a gesture that quickly drew attention amid the midfielder’s limited game time this season.
Mainoo has endured a frustrating campaign, starting just once in all competitions, and was again left out of the starting XI against Andoni Iraola’s side.
He was introduced for the final 29 minutes as United battled back to secure a point.
Speaking at his press conference on Friday, Amorim made it clear the incident would have no bearing on selection decisions. The Portuguese manager said:
“No, it was not Kobbie that wore the T-shirt, he’s not going to start because of the T-shirt and he’s not going to the bench because of the T-shirt.
“He will play if we feel he’s the right guy. I’m not going to do something to Kobbie because someone in his family did something.”
Amorim also stressed that communication lines remain open. He said:
“He played really well, that is the important thing. My office is always open, nobody went there this week so everything is normal.”
Casemiro’s suspension could open the door for Mainoo against Aston Villa, though speculation continues over a potential January loan.
However, there is a belief that United are keen to keep the 20-year-old at Old Trafford unless an exceptional offer arrives.
