Arsenal no longer set piece kings as rivals take the crown

Mikel Arteta, Nicolas Jover

Arsenal have built a strong reputation for set pieces in recent seasons. They have been dangerous at both ends of the pitch. Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka regularly deliver quality balls into the area.

Gabriel has also posed a major threat in the box. Set-piece coach Nicolas Jover has received plenty of attention for his work during this period.

However, Opta data shows Arsenal have scored 11 set-piece goals in the league this season. That places them behind Manchester United and Leeds United.

Yes, Manchester United have taken over as the Premier League’s leading set-piece side this season. They have now scored more goals from dead-ball situations than any other team.

United edged past Newcastle with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Boxing Day. The goal came in the first half. It proved enough to secure all three points.

Patrick Dorgu scored the winner with a clean volley. The move started from a long throw into the box. It was a well-worked routine.

The goal was United’s 13th from a set piece this season, excluding penalties. That figure puts them ahead of every other team in the league.

Leeds scored 12 goals this season from set pieces. Chelsea are the only other side in double figures, with ten goals.

Several teams sit on eight. Wolves have scored just two set-piece goals from their nine league goals so far. Liverpool and Brentford have three each.

Casemiro has played a key role for United. He has scored four goals from corners this season. The Brazilian remains a constant threat in the air.

United will return to action on Tuesday when they host Wolves. They then travel to Leeds on January 4.
