Kobbie Mainoo makes Manchester United decision

Mainoo’s contract runs until 2027.

Kobbie Mainoo, Ruben Amorim

Kobbie Mainoo has made a decision on his future at Manchester United. The midfielder is having a difficult period under Ruben Amorim.

The last 13 months have been especially challenging. Mainoo has slipped down the pecking order at Old Trafford. His relationship with the manager has also come under scrutiny.

According to The Sun, tensions existed even before a recent incident involving his half brother.

During the 4–4 draw with Bournemouth, a “Free Kobbie Mainoo” T shirt was worn in the stands. That moment is not believed to have gone down well internally.

Despite that situation and links with other clubs, those close to Mainoo insist his focus remains unchanged.

He wants to stay and revive his career at United. He wants to fulfil his potential at the club he joined as a child.

United blocked a loan move last summer. Similar talk resurfaced ahead of January window. Once again, the club shut that door.

Amorim made it clear that Mainoo would not be leaving, even temporarily. Despite his lack of minutes, the manager continues to describe him as part of the club’s future.

Mainoo’s contract runs until 2027. United also hold an option for an additional year. Because of that, there is no immediate pressure on his future.

However, talks over a new deal have not progressed. Mainoo rejected United’s opening contract offer at the start of 2025. He was only 17 when he signed his current deal in February 2023.

Since then, he has experienced major highs. He scored in the 2024 FA Cup final. He also played an important role for England at the European Championship.

Now, his lack of game time is becoming a concern. His chances of making the World Cup squad are under threat. Thomas Tuchel is currently unlikely to select him.

Mainoo was also absent from United’s recent 1–1 draw with Wolves. That match summed up a difficult period for Manchester United and for Kobbie Mainoo himself.
