Manchester United may be forced into the transfer market after Patrick Dorgu’s injury setback. The Danish winger suffered a hamstring injury against Arsenal last weekend.
He could be out of action for around 10 weeks. That timeline effectively rules him out until April and leaves Michael Carrick short of options in an already thin squad.
United had planned to take a cautious approach in January. The focus was on avoiding short-term fixes and instead lining up long-term additions in the summer.
However, this latest injury blow could now change that thinking. According to The Guardian, United are monitoring Rennes striker Mohamed Kader Meite as a potential option this month.
The 18-year-old French youth international is valued at around €30 million. Interest from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal is also believed to be a factor, which could complicate any move.
Meite is not a like-for-like replacement for Dorgu. The United winger operates wide and offers defensive support, while the Rennes youngster is a pure centre-forward.
Under Carrick, United’s early success has come through the central partnership of Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes.
That duo combined for goals against Manchester City and Arsenal, driving much of United’s attacking play.
In both matches, Matheus Cunha was introduced to replace Mbeumo centrally, while Dorgu held the left-sided role. With Dorgu now unavailable, Carrick might now have to tweak that balance.
That context explains why a striker like Meite has become a target for the Red Devils. United now have to make a decision on whether to act before the window closes.
🚨 Manchester United could decide to go into the transfer market to cover Patrick Dorgu’s absence, with Kader Meïté of Rennes among the names being monitored.
