Borussia Dortmund’s summer plans, built with an eye on the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, are not going entirely to script.
For a club known for identifying rising stars early and giving them a platform to shine, this transfer window has presented a frustrating puzzle they have not yet solved.
Hoping to reinforce their midfield with youthful dynamism, Dortmund turned their attention to a player who not only fits their model but also shares a strong emotional link with the club.
The Bundesliga side were eager to bring in fresh legs ahead of a demanding schedule, with the Club World Cup fast approaching and squad depth crucial for success.
However, according to Sport Bild, talks between Dortmund and Sunderland have reached a standstill.
The German side opened discussions with a formal offer believed to be around €25 million, aiming to strike a deal quickly before pre-season preparations began.
But the newly-promoted Premier League club have not budged. Sunderland remain firm on their asking price, reportedly pointing to the player’s €40 million release clause as a non-negotiable condition for any transfer.
What complicates matters further is the player’s personal ambition. He is said to be enthusiastic about the idea of joining Dortmund, especially with the opportunity to feature on the world stage in the Club World Cup.
He sees the Bundesliga club as the ideal next step to grow and compete at the highest level just what his brother Jude Bellingham did.
Yet, for now, Jobe Bellingham’s move to Dortmund is on hold. Unless either club changes its stance in the coming days, the deal could collapse altogether leaving the talented midfielder stuck in limbo and Dortmund without one of their key summer targets.
Whether a compromise can be found remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Dortmund’s plans for the summer have just become a lot more complicated.
