The much-anticipated clash between Spain and Argentina in the Finalissima 2026 is facing a major concern, not because of football but for geopolitical reasons.
The Finalissima is a joint initiative from UEFA and CONMEBOL. Both governing bodies organise a football match between the champions of each continent.
It was first played in 2022 when the then-EURO champions Italy played the Copa America champions Argentina at Wembley Stadium. And La Albiceleste won the game 3-0.
This year, the reigning European champions, Spain, will once again take on the reigning Copa America champions (also World champions) Argentina in the 2026 Finalissima.
The match was originally scheduled to take place in 2025. However, it was later rescheduled to be played in March 2026. The official date for the game was 27 March.
Now, there is a massive concern for the Finalissima 2026 to take place on its scheduled date, time, and venue. The biggest concern is perhaps with the venue.
Due to the ongoing geopolitical crisis in the Middle East, both UEFA and CONMEBOL are in discussions over where they should play this highly-anticipated clash.
Originally, it was planned to be played at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar. But the regional tension has forced both governing bodies to move the match away from the Middle East.
Now, there has been no official announcement yet, and according to a UEFA Statement sent to Reuters, they have yet to make up their minds. The statement read:
“Discussions are ongoing with the local organisers, who have made a tremendous effort to ensure the match is a success.
“A final decision is expected by the end of next week. At this stage, no alternative venue is being considered.”
Now, Qatar is trying to keep the match at Doha because of the investments they have already made. But if things don’t improve, then the match could be moved from Qatar.
UEFA and CONMEBOL have three cities in mind as the alternative venue for the Finalissima 2026: London, Rome, and Milan, with the English capital emerging as the leading option, as per reports.

UEFA and CONMEBOL are meeting this week with a decision expected within 48 hours.
London is the leading host option, with Milan and Rome also considered.
