Manchester United are pushing for a strong finish this season. Champions League qualification is now within reach.
So, the Red devils have started planning for the next season already as they might have to make key decision.
One situation is becoming complicated. It involves Andre Onana, who is currently away from the club.
United had allowed him to leave on a loan deal to Trabzonspor. The move was meant to ease pressure on the squad.
Also, it helped them reduce the wage bill. That became important after missing out on European football this season.
However, there is no option or obligation to make Onana’s loan deal permanent. So, he will return to Old Trafford in July. That is where the problem begins.
According to The Sun, United have a clause in each player’s contract that ensures their wages drop by 25 per cent if the Red Devils fail to reach the Champions League.
But things are now changing. Michael Carrick’s side sit third in the league table. So, a return to Europe’s elite competition looks very likely. That will trigger salary increases across the squad.
This means Andre Onana will see his wages rise again. That could create a difficult situation for the club. Now, Manchester United are planning to sell him.
But the higher salary could reduce interest. Sources close to Onana say he wants to stay. He is ready to fight for his place at the club.
Also, he is keen on playing in the Champions League again. Onana is ready to compete with Senne Lammens for the No.1 spot.
However, United are not fully convinced. His contract runs until 2028. United would need around £19 million to avoid a financial loss.
So, while Andre Onana is set for a massive pay rise, his long-term future at Manchester United remains uncertain.
