Arsenal are looking to secure the future of one of their most important players. The club are reportedly preparing a new contract for a key defender in Mikel Arteta’s system.
The Gunners caught the eye of the entire Europe when they beat Real Madrid and played the semi-final of the Champions League last year. However, they did lose to the eventual champions, PSG.
But the style of football and the performance of some of the players have caught the eyes of European giants.
Bayern Munich reportedly wanted to sign an Arsenal defender next summer. Similarly, there are interests from multiple big European clubs for various Arsenal players.
That is why Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta devised a plan to give improved contracts to their best players to keep them at the club for many more years to come.
The North London club are looking to apply a similar strategy with the likes of Bukayo Saka and David Raya. Now, Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta are ready to do the same thing with Jurrien Timber.
As per the Evening Standard, the club have opened discussions over a new deal despite his current contract still having more than two years left.
Since recovering from a serious ACL injury, the 24-year-old has grown into one of Arsenal’s most reliable performers.
Timber’s performances have limited Ben White’s opportunities this season. The Dutchman has become the first-choice option on the right side of defence.
In just 7 Premier League games, he has scored twice, assisted twice, and topped several key defensive metrics for Arsenal.
The former Ajax man leads the team in tackles, ground duels, and through-balls created from open play. Only Gabriel Magalhaes has played more minutes across all competitions this season.
For Arsenal, tying Timber down to a new long-term deal is about securing one of the cornerstones of Arteta’s defence for years to come.
