Arsenal’s season ended in heartbreak after their Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday night.
The Gunners pushed the French side all the way before eventually losing on penalties after 120 exhausting minutes.
Despite the disappointment in Europe, Arsenal still enjoyed an excellent campaign overall after finally ending their 22-year wait for a Premier League title.
Now, attention is shifting towards the World Cup, with several Arsenal players preparing to join their national teams ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
However, one of the club’s most important players is now facing a worrying race against time.
According to Foot Mercato, Arsenal defender William Saliba is now a serious doubt for the World Cup after aggravating an injury during the defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
The defender reportedly entered the Champions League final carrying an injury problem but still decided to play through the pain in one of the biggest matches of the season.
Although he completed the full 120 minutes and delivered another impressive performance, reports suggest the situation worsened afterwards.
Saliba could now be sidelined for several weeks, creating concern within the France setup just days before the tournament begins.
The 25-year-old had already been selected in Didier Deschamps’ final 26-man squad. Also, he would have started alongside Dayot Upamecano in central defence.
Outgoing Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate was also competing for a starting role. Still, Saliba remained one of France’s key players heading into the competition.
Saliba is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in world football. So, his possible absence would represent a huge blow for France ahead of the World Cup.
