Cape Verde arrived at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with little expectation placed upon them from outside the country.
By the time their journey ended, they had become one of the stories of the tournament.
The Blue Sharks became the smallest nation in history to reach the knockout stage during their first-ever World Cup appearance.
Under Bubista, they opened with a memorable goalless draw against European champions Spain before earning another point against Uruguay.
A further draw against Saudi Arabia secured second place in Group H and an unbeaten passage into the knockout rounds.
Their run eventually came to an end against defending champions Argentina in Miami.
However, even in defeat, Cape Verde won admirers after pushing the holders to extra time in a thrilling 3-2 encounter.
Back home, interest in the island nation surged following their performances on the global stage.
Tourism and worldwide attention increased significantly as supporters discovered one of the tournament’s great underdog stories.
At the centre of that remarkable journey stood veteran goalkeeper Vozinha. The 40-year-old entered the competition playing for GD Chaves in Portugal’s second division.
However, his performances during the tournament transformed him into one of the faces of the World Cup.
His seven-save display against Spain earned him the Man of the Match award and quickly attracted worldwide attention.
By the end of the tournament, he had produced 18 saves and recorded two clean sheets across four matches.
According to A Bola, that unforgettable performance against Spain has now earned Vozinha an extraordinary honour away from football.
The Spanish researchers are naming a newly discovered marine mollusc species after the Cape Verde goalkeeper.
The species, scientifically named Aldisavozinhai, belongs to the nudibranch family of marine molluscs commonly known as sea slugs.
Spanish researcher Jesus Ortea explained that the name was chosen in recognition of the goalkeeper’s decisive contribution during the draw against Spain.
Vozinha’s World Cup journey has already secured his place in Cape Verdean football history. Now, it has also ensured his name will remain part of scientific history as well.
