Manchester United’s midfield continues to be one of the most closely watched areas at Old Trafford

Ruben Amorim has largely been working with inherited options, while rivals around United continue to refresh and strengthen their squads.

The Portuguese boss did manage to add attacking players last summer. But he wanted a midfielder too. And, it seems the midfield and defence are the weak links in Amorim’s squad.

With European qualification a clear objective, United’s recruitment strategy is once again under intense focus.

The Red Devils are eyeing a move for multiple midfielders as the January window approaches. And, one name that has refused to fade from their list is Carlos Baleba.

The Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder has now spoken publicly about whether his strong links with Manchester United affected his form this season.

Baleba was heavily linked with Manchester United during the summer after a run of commanding displays that established him as one of the league’s most powerful young midfielders.

Brighton were not ready to sell him this summer, and United didn’t have time to look for alternatives.

Since then, the 21-year-old has remained a regular under Fabian Hürzeler, making 15 appearances across competitions.

While his involvement has been consistent, some observers have questioned whether transfer speculation contributed to a more uneven start to the campaign.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Baleba addressed the issue directly. He said (via CentreDevils):

“I don’t think it affected me negatively, but I had a lot of pressure on me. When I started this season, I wanted to show the same performances as last season.”

“Every day I try to work hard and get back to my level. Did I put too much pressure on myself? Yes, I think so, but I think it’s good.”

“It’s good for me, because now I have to get through this slightly stressful period, get back on the horse and continue working hard.”

It seems like Manchester United will reignite their interest in Baleba. But a January move for the player is highly unlikely.
