An ex-Arsenal star’s latest claim has left fans stunned.
More than a decade after leaving the club, the former midfielder insists that, in his prime, he would start ahead of both Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi.
The partnership between Rice and Zubimendi is widely regarded as one of the best in world football.
Rice’s impact since joining Arsenal in 2023 has been formidable, while Zubimendi’s seamless arrival this summer has elevated Mikel Arteta’s midfield even further.
Their balance, work rate, and tactical brilliance have been central to Arsenal’s rise to the top of both the Premier League and Champions League.
Yet the former midfielder, speaking on ESPN Africa, showed no hesitation when asked whether he could break into the current side.
Alex Song was presented with several elite clubs and asked if he would start for them in his prime.
Song responded instantly when Arsenal were mentioned, saying: “Yes, Gunners for life! Yes.”
His self-belief has always been part of his personality, stretching back to his seven-year spell at the club. Song joined the Gunners from Bastia in 2005.
Song enjoyed strong periods under Arsene Wenger and made 204 appearances. But his 2012 move to Barcelona for £15 million marked the beginning of a decline.
He spent much of his time in Spain as a backup option. Song never rediscovered the level he once showed in North London.
While his confidence remains admirable, comparisons to Rice and Zubimendi feel generous at best.
The current duo have taken Arsenal to a standard, which makes Arteta’s midfield among the elites of Europe, forming a midfield partnership central to the Gunners’ title challenge.
