Manchester United have finally decided to part ways with Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese boss gave an explosive interview where he demanded that he should be called the ‘manager’.
However, the Red Devils have clearly mentioned in their official statement that Amorim was the ‘head coach’. Amorim also called incompetence from the board.
So, it was inevitable that he would get the sack as the relationship between the Portuguese and the board members were non-existent.
For now, Darren Fletcher will take up the role of the interim manager of the club. But Manchester United will have to find a permanent manager.
Because of that, speculation around possible successors of Ruben Amorim has intensified. One name has begun to surface from Spain.
Xavi Hernandez has been out of work for over a year. He left Barcelona at the end of the 2023–24 season. That departure paved the way for Hansi Flick to take over.
After his dismissal, Xavi chose to step away from management. He announced a sabbatical and only began considering new roles from this summer. So far, he has not accepted any offers.
However, that stance could now change. According to Fabrizio Romano, Xavi is closely monitoring the Premier League.
The report, carried by CaughtOffside, claims that Manchester United hold strong appeal for the former midfielder.
Romano stated that Xavi is studying English football carefully. He added that the Spaniard would be ready to take the United job immediately if the opportunity arose.
Importantly, the report suggests European football would not be a deciding factor. Xavi would still be willing to move to Old Trafford even without Champions League football.
That willingness underlines his interest in the Premier League project. It also highlights the attraction Manchester United continue to hold.
With Amorim getting the sack, Xavi’s name will surely be in the conversation while appointing the next Manchester United manager.
