Ex-Manchester United legend controversially sacked

Robin van Persie sacked by Feyenoord despite Champions League qualification.

Some sackings arrive at the end of a dismal season.

Relegation.

Bottom of the table.

Results that leave no choice.

This isn’t one of those sackings.

Robin van Persie led Feyenoord to second place in the Eredivisie this season.

Securing direct qualification for next year’s Champions League.

And he’s still been sacked.

Robin van Persie sacked by Feyenoord despite Champions League qualification

According to The Sun, Robin Van Persie has left his position as Feyenoord head coach after just 16 months in charge, with the club’s newly appointed leadership pair of Devy Rigaux and Robert Eenhoorn deciding to change direction despite the team’s strong final league standing.

Rigaux had been explicit when he arrived.

He said publicly that no position at the club was safe, including the manager’s.

He meant it.

Van Persie’s departure comes as part of a broader organisational reshuffle following a season that was far from straightforward despite the second-place finish.

The 42-year-old took over from Brian Priske in February 2025, walking away from Heerenveen mid-season to accept the role at the club where he had started and finished his playing career.

The return felt emotional and full of promise.

But the campaign was consistently inconsistent.

Between October and January, Feyenoord won just three games in fourteen across all competitions.

Arun that severely damaged confidence in Van Persie’s ability to impose a clear identity on the side.

However, questions were also raised about his management style internally.

Including decisions relating to the captaincy and the way he handled certain player relationships.

When Rigaux arrived, the writing was already on the wall.

Van Persie met with the new leadership.

The assessment was made.

And despite a contract running until mid-2027, the decision was taken to move on.

For the former Manchester United striker, it’s a blow that will sting deeply.

The irony is painful.

He qualified the club for the Champions League.

Yet, he won’t be there to manage in it.

What happens next for Van Persie in management remains to be seen.

But his passion for coaching has never been in doubt.
