A former Manchester United player has opened up about his time at the club. He has shared how the squad reacted to some controversial comments of Ruben Amorim last season.
The veteran has worked under Amorim during the Portuguese coach’s time at Old Trafford. He made 22 appearances under him.
Also, he was one of the senior figures in the dressing room when Amorim arrived in November 2024. Ruben Amorim quickly drew attention after taking the job.
His 3-4-3 system was one talking point. However, his honesty with the media caused even more headlines.
In January, Amorim described his team as “maybe the worst” in the club’s history. He made those comments after a 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford.
That result was United’s fourth loss in five home matches. It also left the club with just 11 points since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag.
Eriksen believes those comments did not help the situation. Speaking to The Times, he admitted the public criticism only added pressure to an already struggling squad.
He said the comments were better suited for internal conversations. He felt the players were already doing their best and did not need extra scrutiny.
According to Eriksen, the reaction inside the squad was one of frustration. The Dane said:
“I don’t think that helped at all, no. Then if he’s right or wrong, whatever, but I think for us it was a bit of like, ‘Oh, here we go again. Another headline.’”
United eventually finished 15th in the Premier League. It was their lowest-ever finish in the competition. Eriksen left the club in the summer when his contract expired.
Despite the criticism, Eriksen praised the club for protecting players from outside noise. He said United did well to shield the squad from pundits and former players.
He also claimed Amorim’s honesty can be a strength. Eriksen said the manager was clear about his ideas and expectations from the start.
Amorim remained committed to his system for much of the season. He only switched to a back four later on, including in the Boxing Day win over Newcastle.
Eriksen left England after making 107 appearances for Manchester United. He scored eight goals and registered 19 assists before joining Wolfsburg on a free transfer.
