Some decisions in football feel significant in the moment.

Others feel even more significant when you look back at them.

Premier League panel rules Gabriel should have been sent off vs Manchester City

According to The Athletic, the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents panel have ruled that Gabriel Magalhaes should have received a red card for his physical altercation with Erling Haaland during Arsenal’s clash with Manchester City.

The incident in question saw the two players press their foreheads together before Gabriel made what the majority of the panel described as “additional forward movement of the head.”

A motion they considered aggressive behaviour warranting a dismissal.

Referee Anthony Taylor showed both players a yellow card.

VAR did not intervene, determining that no clear error had been made by the on-field official.

But the panel, made up of three former players or coaches, one Premier League representative, and one representative from PGMOL, disagreed.

Three of the five felt Gabriel’s movement was deliberate.

They believed it was aggressive enough to warrant a red card for violent conduct.

However, the other two argued that insufficient force was applied and that there was no initial backward movement from the Arsenal defender.

It’s a fine line.

But one that Gabriel came dangerously close to crossing.

Had he been sent off, he would have faced a three-match suspension.

An absence that, given the stage of the season, could have had enormous consequences for Arsenal’s title challenge.

So, Haaland’s reaction in the moment actually played a role in the outcome.

By staying on his feet and not going down, he gave referee Taylor the opportunity to manage the situation with a broader perspective.

Had Haaland fallen, the optics would have been very different.

And so, quite possibly, would the card.
