Manchester United are once again searching for a new permanent head coach. Ruben Amorim’s dismissal after just 14 months has brought another project to an abrupt end.
Darren Fletcher will take interim charge for the Premier League clash with Burnley. United are expected to appoint a caretaker until the end of the season.
A permanent decision is likely to be made in the summer. However, speculation around candidates has intensified.
Oliver Glasner has currently become the frontrunner, while Gareth Southgate, Mauricio Pochettino and Andoni Iraola have all been mentioned.
Amid the noise, Gary Neville has offered his thoughts. The former United captain stopped short of naming a single preferred option but did reveal two managers he greatly admires.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville stressed that choosing the right coach is only part of the solution. He pointed towards deeper structural issues at Old Trafford.
He said the club’s recruitment and football leadership must already have a clear plan. Neville warned that too many strong managers have struggled at United in recent years.
Later, Gary Neville did drop the names that caught attention. He admitted he is a huge admirer of Diego Simeone and Ernesto Valverde.
Neville also referenced Thomas Tuchel, but questioned whether United realistically have the opportunity to appoint coaches of that level. He admitted there are no easy answers.
What matters most, he argued, is identity. Neville believes United must stay true to themselves rather than moulding the club around a coach. He said:
“Manchester United have got to appoint a manager that fits the DNA of their club.
“Barcelona will never change for anybody. Ajax will never change for anybody. I don’t believe United should change for anybody.”
For Manchester United, the next appointment may define more than just the next season.
