James Rodriguez signed for Minnesota United this month on a free transfer. His contract will be valid until June 30 this year.

But Minnesota United will have an option to extend his contract till the end of the season, which is December.

Now, after signing for the Major League Soccer club, the 2014 World Cup star got into trouble.

Donald Trump’s government is trying to solve the immigration problem in the United States of America by running Operation Metro Surge.

This is a large-scale deployment of over 3,000 ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

This operation has resulted in thousands of arrests and two fatal shootings of U.S. Because of this operation, Minnesota United had to relocate its preseason training.

Now, their new marquee signing, James Rodriguez, could have faced ICE raids. But thankfully, he narrowly avoided it.

Rodriguez joined Minnesota United with a tourist VISA. He needed a P-1 work visa. Otherwise, he would not be allowed to train or play for the MLS club.

But according to the Daily Mail, James Rodriguez obtained his P-1 work visa on 17th February. So, he can now participate in training and play matches for his new club.

After joining Minnesota United, the Colombian captain said in the official statement from the MLS club:

“I’m very happy for this new chapter in my life. I hope to be at my best so I can bring joy to this city and to all of the people who are putting their faith in me.

“I’m looking forward to meeting all of the passionate Minnesota fans because I’m also a passionate player who wants to give everything on the field and always wants to win.”

The MLS season will start on February 21, 2026, and James Rodriguez could be in action on the first night as his team takes on Austin FC at Q2 Stadium.
