James Rodriguez has suffered a worrying setback. The situation developed after the international break.
The Colombian captain featured against Croatia and France. He played more than an hour against Croatia in Orlando on March 26.
Also, he featured again in the 3-1 defeat to France. That game took place in Landover, Maryland. Rodriguez played 63 minutes in that match.
At the time, there were no visible signs of any issue. However, things changed after his return. The problem only appeared once he was back in Minneapolis.
Soon after, he required medical attention. The situation was serious enough to lead to hospitalisation.
The Colombian Football Federation released a detailed statement, confirming the nature of the issue and providing reassurance. The statement read:
“The Colombian Football Federation, through its medical staff and the National Teams Directorate, wishes to inform the public and media about the health status of the captain of the Colombian National Team: James Rodríguez.”
“It has been confirmed… that the midfielder has been under professional observation due to a non-sports-related medical condition.”
“The day after the match against France, the player presented with severe dehydration that required hospitalisation for the past 72 hours for preventative and recovery monitoring.”
“This situation is not related to musculoskeletal injuries nor is it linked to the development of his football activities.”
“The current medical report indicates a favourable evolution and a steady improvement.”
Communication remains ongoing with his club, Minnesota United, who are also closely monitoring his progress.
Rodriguez joined the MLS side earlier this year. So far, he has made two substitute appearances. Now, attention turns to his recovery.
Minnesota are set to face LA Galaxy when the MLS season resumes. The 34-year-old has had a long journey in football.
James Rodriguez joined Real Madrid for £63 million in 2014 after a standout World Cup. Since then, he has played for Everton, Al-Rayyan, Olympiacos, Sao Paulo, and Rayo Vallecano.
