Minnesota United officially release FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winner

Minnesota have now officially parted ways with one of the biggest names to represent the club.

Minnesota United have endured a mixed period across the last two Major League Soccer campaigns.

The Loons produced an exciting 2025 season and established themselves as one of the Western Conference’s strongest attacking sides.

However, their postseason journey ended in the Western Conference semi-finals against LA Galaxy.

Minnesota then entered the 2026 campaign under new head coach Cameron Knowles as they looked to build on that progress.

However, their current season has proved more challenging, with the club sitting eighth in the Western Conference.

The Loons have collected 22 points from 15 matches after recording six wins, five draws and four defeats.

Meanwhile, Minnesota have also made several changes to their squad during a busy year in the transfer market.

The club added Kyle Duncan, Mauricio Gonzalez and Marcus Caldeira, while Matus Kmet later departed for FC Banik Ostrava.

However, Minnesota United have now officially parted ways with one of the biggest names to represent the club.

The club confirmed that James Rodriguez has left after they decided not to exercise the extension option in his short-term contract.

Rodriguez joined Minnesota in February 2026 after leaving Mexican side Leon.

The 35-year-old arrived with huge pedigree, having previously won the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot in 2014 after scoring six goals for Colombia.

However, his spell in Major League Soccer failed to live up to those expectations. Rodriguez struggled with injuries and physical issues, limiting his opportunities during his short stay.

He failed to score for Minnesota, although he did contribute two assists during a 2-2 draw against Austin FC.

The midfielder later left for international duty before captaining Colombia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Following the tournament, Minnesota decided against extending his contract.

Therefore, Rodriguez is now a free agent as he considers the next move of his career.
