Arsenal’s hopes of lifting silverware took a hit over the weekend. The defeat in the Carabao Cup final has raised a few fresh questions.
The Gunners lost 2-0 to Manchester City at Wembley. It was a disappointing performance on a big stage.
So, their dream of winning all the trophies this season has already taken a blow. The quadruple is now officially off the table.
However, the focus now shifts to what remains. Arsenal are still in the Premier League title race, as they are on top of the table. The Gunners are also in the Champions League.
Mikel Arteta’s side have been consistent for most of the season. They have kept results steady and avoided major setbacks.
Also, their form in Europe has been solid. They managed to get past Bayer Leverkusen in the last round.
Now, they are preparing to face Sporting CP in the quarter-finals. That will be another big test.
If they go through, things will only get tougher. A potential clash with either Atletico Madrid or Barcelona could follow.
So, there is still a long way to go. But not everyone is convinced they can go all the way.
Jamie Carragher has shared his view on the situation. He believes Arsenal still have a major issue. Speaking on Sky Sports, he said (The Standard):
“I think what we saw today and one of the criticisms I have of Arsenal as team, as I’ve said they are the best team in the league, they have only lost four games in 50.
“Let’s not get too carried away, let’s not forget that.
“But in terms of, not so much the league, but maybe the Champions League because they are on the right side of the draw, they’ve got a great opportunity.
“But that today, I was looking at it again and I have said it consistently, they lack something really special in attack – a world class talent who could have just turned that game for them, they definitely lack that.”
So, Jamie Carragher feels Arsenal are missing a decisive figure in the final third. That is why he believes they could fall short in Europe despite their strong overall form.
The Gunners are already tracking Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid ahead of the summer transfer window.
