Jose Mourinho is on the verge of achieving something remarkable with Benfica, but the outcome may not bring the reward many would expect.

The Portuguese manager has guided his side through an incredible league campaign without suffering a single defeat.

With just four games left in the Primeira Liga season, Benfica have gone 30 matches unbeaten.

That run includes 21 wins and nine draws, with the latest result being a 2-1 victory away at Sporting Lisbon.

It is a record that mirrors one of the most famous achievements in Premier League history by Arsenal in 2004. However, unlike that iconic season, this one may not end with a title.

Despite their unbeaten run, Benfica currently sit second in the table with 72 points. Porto lead the standings comfortably on 79 points, having won 25 of their matches so far.

Meanwhile, Sporting remain firmly in the race. They sit just one point behind Benfica and still have a game in hand.

If they win that match, they could move ahead and push Mourinho’s side down the table.

That scenario would have serious consequences. Dropping to third would mean Benfica miss out on Champions League qualification next season.

It is a surprising situation given the consistency Mourinho’s team has shown throughout the campaign.

Also, something similar happened during the 1977-78 season. Benfica were unbeaten in that season but failed to win the league as Porto finished above them due to superior goal difference.

Meanwhile, Transfer News Live reported earlier that Mourinho could be in line for a major move despite the mixed outcome in Portugal.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager returned to Benfica in September 2025, the club where he began his managerial journey 25 years ago. However, he has yet to win a trophy since his return.
