Manchester United get injury boost ahead of Liverpool clash

The Red Devils will also look to complete a league double over their rivals after winning 2-1 at Anfield earlier in the season.

Manchester United have received a timely boost ahead of their Premier League clash against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Preparations for the game have already begun, and there is fresh optimism within the squad. The club had concerns earlier in the week after Matheus Cunha missed the 2-1 win over Brentford.

Cunha picked up a minor issue following the victory against Chelsea, where he scored the winning goal.

That injury ruled him out of the Brentford game. However, the situation did not appear serious at the time.

Head coach Michael Carrick had already suggested that the problem would not keep him out for long. Speaking after the Brentford match on Sky Sports (relayed by GOAL), Carrick said:

“(Cunha) just had a bit of a sore hip flexor after the Chelsea game the other day.

“He was looking promising during the week, so we thought he might have been OK, but he just didn’t quite recover quick enough.

“It is nothing too serious, but unfortunately he doesn’t make it tonight.”

Those comments have now been backed up by the latest developments. The forward returned to group training on Thursday, which puts him back in contention for the Liverpool game.

Matheus Cunha could now play a role on Sunday, although it remains unclear whether he will start.

His return creates a selection dilemma for Carrick, especially after Benjamin Sesko scored in the last match. Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo may now face competition for places in the starting lineup.

The stakes remain high. United could secure Champions League qualification depending on other results involving Brighton and Bournemouth.

If not, a win over Liverpool will guarantee a top-five finish. So, the Red Devils will also look to complete a league double over their rivals after winning 2-1 at Anfield earlier in the season.
