Manchester United’s goalkeeping situation has been under the spotlight for months. Errors from Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir have cost the team on several occasions.

However, Senne Lammens may have just given the fans a reason to hope again.

Ruben Amorim made a bold decision last weekend. The Manchester United boss dropped Bayindir and handed a debut to the summer signing in goal.

Lammens justified Amorim’s decision. The Red Devils kept a clean sheet in their victory over Sunderland.

United legend Peter Schmeichel gave his thoughts on the performance after the final whistle. The Dane also took a sly dig at the goalkeepers who had struggled before Lammens.

Speaking on the Monday Night Club (via BBC), Schmeichel said he was pleased with the clean sheet but made it clear that mistakes in recent years have damaged United’s reputation.

“You think about the goalkeepers we’ve had and how many goals we’ve conceded from errors – nine already this season – it’s too much.

It’s nice to see a clean sheet and a solid performance because that’s something we’ve not seen for a while.”

Schmeichel praised the young Belgian for his maturity in the first match but also warned him.

“This young lad (Senne Lammens) didn’t have much to do for a long time, but he did well when called upon. You could see his confidence grow after that first save.”

However, Schmeichel believes true quality will be revealed when Senne Lammens faces real pressure.

“We’ll really see what kind of goalkeeper he is when he makes mistakes and has to respond to them.”

The 23-year-old joined United this summer as part of Amorim’s squad rebuild. The manager wanted a fresh start in goal after Onana’s loan exit to Trabzonspor.

Reports suggest Senne Lammens will retain his place when Manchester United face Liverpool after the international break.

That test will reveal whether the Belgian can handle the pressure of one of the Premier League’s fiercest rivalries.
