Manchester United are preparing for a huge summer rebuild after securing their return to the Champions League under Michael Carrick.
The club already started identifying several key targets ahead of the new season as Carrick pushes for major improvements across the squad.
The Red Devils are currently close to completing a £35 million move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson. The club also continue searching for a new centre-back and left winger.
Despite the expected arrivals, one major question surrounding Old Trafford recently focused on Bruno Fernandes and his long-term future.
The Portuguese midfielder remains one of Manchester United’s most important players after another impressive individual campaign.
Fernandes collected several personal awards last season and again proved decisive during crucial moments for the club.
Now, according to The Mirror, Manchester United have decided to temporarily pause contract talks with Bruno Fernandes.
The report claims club officials received assurances from Fernandes that he has no intention of leaving Old Trafford anytime soon.
Fernandes reportedly held discussions with senior Manchester United figures before travelling to North America with Portugal for the World Cup.
During those talks, the midfielder made it clear he wants to remain at the club.
The report states Manchester United now plan to reopen negotiations over an improved contract before the end of 2026.
Fernandes currently earns around £250,000 per week and approaches the final year of his deal. Manchester United still possess the option to extend the contract by another 12 months.
Reports also claim co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has shifted focus towards strengthening the squad first before finalising Fernandes’ long-term situation.
Another important factor behind Fernandes’ decision reportedly involved Manchester United guaranteeing major squad investment this summer.
The midfielder reportedly wanted assurances that the club remained serious about competing for major honours again. Fernandes also possesses a reported £55 million release clause.
However, Manchester United reportedly remain relaxed because the midfielder turns 32 in September and would likely command enormous wages elsewhere.
