When Harry Maguire headed in the winner against Liverpool at Anfield last Sunday, this marked Manchester United’s first win at Anfield since January 2016.
Not only did it signify their first win away to their biggest rivals in some time, but it is also their first set of back-to-back Premier League wins since the opening day of last season, after winning their final two games in the season prior.
United fans are hoping that this could be the start of a turnaround in form for the club after a difficult first season for manager Ruben Amorim since arriving from Sporting Lisbon on November 1st 2024.
A 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in May’s Europa League final meant that United are without European football this season.
This marks their first campaign since the 2014/15 season without any European football.
However, they have expressed recent dissatisfaction over their schedule this season.
Manchester United make official complaint to the Premier League
According to The Athletic, United have spoken to the Premier League with concerns over the amount of midweek games they are set to feature in between now and Christmas.
This is despite one game a week from today until the end of November.
Included in their run of games are three consecutive midweek home fixtures, with games against Everton in November and Bournemouth in December having been rescheduled for Monday evenings.
However, after today’s clash with Brighton and Hove Albion, they will not play a home game on a weekend until at least the 27th December, and with the times of those games not yet set, they could be waiting even longer.
United CEO Omar Berrada has been in conversation with the Premier League’s Richard Masters, stating the club’s position.
The Athletic have been informed that discussions have been constructive and United have pointed out the cultural importance of match going fans to the English game.
United have also reportedly requested a change in how the games were scheduled to ensure that future matches around the festive period are selected for broadcast at a much earlier stage to enable fans to be informed of fixture changes during a time when they could have significant family commitments.
The Athletic has also been made aware of multiple fans who had already booked travel, accommodation and tickets for games, only to be unable to attend the rearranged fixture.
Fans have beeb able to return their tickets but issues have arisen when trying to get refunds for travel and accommodation.
This even saw an Irish supporters club reduce their party size from 35 to 15 for an upcoming game with Everton.
Having a lot of Monday games has reportedly also caused issues for United’s plans for a mid-season friendly in Saudi Arabia in attempts to reclaim money lost from no European fixtures.
