Manchester United miss out on €18M windfall as Real Betis block transfer

Manchester United have missed out on a substantial potential payment.

Manchester United have focused on reshaping Michael Carrick’s squad after securing Champions League qualification last season.

The Red Devils finished third after Carrick transformed their fortunes during the second half of the campaign.

United have since strengthened their midfield, while several established players have departed Old Trafford this summer.

However, the club have now missed an opportunity to collect another significant sum from a former player.

The situation relates to a sell-on agreement United secured during one of their previous transfer deals.

According to ABC (via Sport Witness), Real Betis rejected an approach worth around €50million for Antony.

A wealthy club from outside the Premier League expressed interest and proposed the lucrative deal for the Brazilian.

Betis immediately rejected the approach because they consider Antony an important part of their squad.

The winger has become a key player and fan favourite since leaving Manchester United for Spain.

Betis signed Antony permanently from United last summer for around €21-22million after his successful loan spell.

The agreement included bonuses linked to Champions League participation and a significant future sell-on arrangement.

United and Betis would split any profit from a future Antony transfer equally under that agreement.

Therefore, accepting the €50million proposal could have earned Manchester United around €18million from the deal.

However, the sell-on clause also reduced the financial benefit that Betis would receive from selling Antony.

The Spanish club believed their remaining funds would not provide enough money to secure a suitable replacement.

Betis also consider the current transfer market inflated and want Antony available for their Champions League campaign.

The proposed transfer consequently failed to progress beyond the initial approach after Betis rejected it outright.

That decision means Manchester United have missed out on a substantial potential payment from Antony’s latest transfer interest.
