Arsenal’s return to winning ways came with an uncomfortable sense of déjà vu as more injury concerns emerged during their 2-0 victory over Brentford.
The result restored a five-point lead over Manchester City. But the night quickly shifted from relief to anxiety for Mikel Arteta.
With Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba already sidelined, the defensive situation deteriorated further when Cristhian Mosquera limped off early after landing awkwardly.
Jurrien Timber stepped in and helped secure another clean sheet, yet stability never felt guaranteed. Then came the moment that silenced the Emirates.
Declan Rice, the heartbeat of Arsenal’s title charge, required treatment for a calf issue before being withdrawn late on.
His removal, just before Bukayo Saka doubled the lead, was as precautionary as it was alarming. After the match, Arteta struck a cautious tone, admitting both players face uncertain assessments.
During the post-match press conference, Mikel Arteta said:
“Obviously it’s never good news. Declan had to come off. We don’t know.
“We have to see tomorrow what he’s got. And Mosquera is the other one that is out.
“Obviously we have big Gabi and Willy out as well. So we have to adapt. It’s been a theme of this season.”
He added that Rice “could not carry on playing” despite being able to walk, while Mosquera’s problem remains unclear, potentially linked to his knee or ankle.
The Arsenal manager also voiced frustration with the relentless schedule, highlighting how quick turnarounds have intensified the strain on his squad.
With a crucial trip to Aston Villa next, and Manchester City applying pressure, Arsenal enter a defining stretch with key players in doubt.
So, the Gunners might have to invest in January to ensure their title charge doesn’t get derailed like the previous seasons.
