Premier League clubs observe Remembrance Day on the second Sunday of November each year.
So, last week, before the start of the games, all Premier League matches began with a minute’s silence.
Also, the Scottish Premiership games have the same tradition. However, this year, something chaotic happened, which goes against the spirit of the occasion.
A deeply uncomfortable scene unfolded at Celtic Park on Sunday as the club’s Remembrance Day tribute ended in chaos.
Referee Don Robertson was forced to cut short the planned minute’s silence after just ten seconds due to loud jeering from sections of the home support.
The disruption came before Celtic’s clash with Kilmarnock, as both teams stood in the centre circle to honour those who lost their lives in conflict.
Moreover, the stadium announcer reminded fans that several former Celtic players died serving in the Great War. It was a moment meant to carry deep respect and reflection.
However, parts of the Celtic crowd reacted with hostility. Many supporters booed, turned their backs to the pitch, and made offensive gestures during the tribute.
Therefore, Robertson ended the silence early to prevent the situation from worsening.
Commentator Rob McLean described the moment on BBC Radio Scotland, calling it “a very brief minute’s silence.”
He explained that the referee made the right call, saying the silence was “threatening to be disrupted” and had already lost its meaning.
Furthermore, he apologised to listeners for the foul language that was picked up on the broadcast.
Also, the incident followed a similar disruption the previous day when Hibernian fans interrupted a Remembrance silence before their game against St Mirren.
As per The Sun, Both cases have drawn sharp criticism across Scottish football, with many calling for stronger sanctions against those involved.
Despite the controversy, Celtic went on to record a dominant 4-0 victory over Kilmarnock.
Yet, the post-match discussion focused more on the behaviour of the supporters than the team’s performance.
