According to Brighton FC, Jason Steele will travel with Thomas Tuchel’s England squad to the 2026 World Cup in his capacity as a training goalkeeper.
He’ll be working alongside the three recognised shot-stoppers in the squad to help prepare them for the biggest tournament in football.
It’s a role that carries real responsibility, even if it never comes with the match-day spotlight.
Steele, 35, was first involved in March when England held a camp ahead of friendlies against Japan and Uruguay.
Now, he’s been confirmed as part of the wider travelling party heading to the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Tuchel’s words about Steele were notably warm.
“We have chosen three goalkeepers and Jason Steele,” the England manager said.
“I want to take the opportunity to thank Jason for being brilliant and thank Brighton for being so co-operative and supportive.”
Steele himself described the experience after his initial March involvement with a simplicity that speaks to his character.
“My job is to come into work every day and try my best,” he said.
“I try to have a positive impact every single day on everything I can control.”
It’s a mindset that has served him well throughout a career that has taken him from Middlesbrough through to Brighton.
He represented Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics.
