Ruben Amorim left Manchester United at the start of this year after an underwhelming run. The Portuguese boss also fell out with the club officials.
A friction between the United hierarchy and Amorim was building because of his tactics. Jason Wilcox wanted Amorim to change formation and switch to a back-four instead of five in the back.
And the Portuguese boss was not happy with that. So, his anger spilt out following a 2-2 draw at Elland Road against Leeds United. During the post-match press conference, Amorim said:
“I just want to say I came here to be the manager, not to be the coach. In every department – the scouting department, the sporting director – [they] need to do their job.
“I will do mine for 18 months, and then we move on. I just want to say that I’m going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. I was really clear on that.
“That is going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone is going to move on. That was the deal. That is my job. Not to be a coach.”
After that explosive press conference, Manchester United sacked Ruben Amorim the following day and appointed Michael Carrick as an interim manager.
Since Carrick took over the charge at Old Trafford, United are on an unbeaten run of six games, where they won five and one game ended in a draw.
Now, the 41-year-old Portuguese manager could be returning to football management with one club already showing interest in the former Manchester United manager.
According to VDG-Cast, Ruben Amorim has become a potential candidate to become the next manager of Vasco da Gama. The Brazilian club is currently facing a relegation threat.
They are 17th in the table and have accumulated just one point from their last three games. The Rio de Janeiro-based club sacked their manager, Fernando Diniz, following a defeat to Fluminense.
Ruben Amorim enjoyed successful spells as a manager in Portugal with Braga and Sporting CP before taking up the biggest challenge of his career with Manchester United, where he failed.
Amorim finished his 14-month tenure in England by becoming the permanent Manchester United manager with the worst win percentage (38.1%) in all competitions.
