Sadio Mane announces retirement

Mane has officially announced his retirement.

The journey of Sadio Mane with Senegal has been one of the defining stories in African football over the past decade.

The forward represented his country across 14 years and became Senegal’s all-time leading goalscorer with 55 goals in 130 appearances.

During that period, he helped guide the Lions of Teranga through the most successful era in their history.

Mane captained Senegal to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title in 2021 before leading them to a second continental crown at the 2025 tournament.

He also represented his country at three FIFA World Cups and remained one of the leading figures of the national team throughout that period.

However, Senegal’s round-of-16 exit against Belgium at the 2026 FIFA World Cup proved to be his final appearance on the international stage.

According to Le Quotidien, Mane has officially announced his retirement from international football in an emotional statement released this month.

The 34-year-old addressed supporters directly and reflected on the sacrifices he made during his time with the national team. Mane said in his farewell message from Dakar:

“Know that I sacrificed everything for this flag. I gave my best and I always fought fiercely for our country.”

The former Senegal captain also asked supporters for forgiveness for any shortcomings or disappointments during his international career.

Meanwhile, he thanked the Senegalese public for the support they showed throughout his time with the national team. He added:

“Your constant support has been the engine of my success.”

Although his international career has now ended, Mane revealed that he intends to remain involved in Senegalese football in the future. He said:

“Tomorrow, I will gladly put my experience at the service of the nation, whether within a technical staff, on the sidelines as a coach, or in the governing bodies.”

His playing days with Senegal may now be over, but his connection with the country remains unchanged.
