Bruno Fernandes found himself at the centre of attention once again at Villa Park. But this time, it is not just for footballing reasons.
He drew attention for his confrontation with Aston Villa supporters during Manchester United’s defeat on Sunday.
The Red Devils lost the game because of a brace from Morgan Rogers. However, Ruben Amorim’s men did perform well.
Matheus Cunha scored the only goal for United, and the Brazilian could have levelled the game for them in the second half.
However, the attention after the game quickly turned to one incident. The Manchester United captain became the target of a stream of X-rated abuse from home fans.
These fans were sitting behind the dugout as the Portuguese international watched the second half from the sidelines.
Head coach Ruben Amorim had to take Fernandes off at half-time after he picked up a worrying injury shortly before the interval.
Wrapped in a large purple coat to protect him from the cold, Fernandes initially ignored the taunts.
However, as the abuse continued, the Portuguese midfielder turned to face the crowd.
With a smiling face, he delivered a cutting response aimed at one particularly vocal supporter. Fernandes said (via The Sun):
“You sing more for me than for your team. Don’t be angry because I always score against you.”
The remark quickly circulated online, and Manchester United fans were delighted. They praised their captain’s composure and sharp wit under pressure.
Fernandes’ night, though, was overshadowed by concerns over his fitness. Amorim later confirmed the midfielder had suffered a soft-tissue issue. So he could be out for a number of matches.
The incident only added to the long-standing tension between Fernandes and Villa supporters. The Portuguese international has a history of influential performances against their side.
