A young Tottenham Hotspur defender could soon face a major decision about his international future. However, the choice is far from straightforward.

Two nations remain firmly in the picture, and another could still emerge. Tottenham Hotspur star Ashley Phillips is currently on loan at Stoke City

As per The Sun, Wales are targeting him, as they attempt to strengthen their squad ahead of a crucial World Cup play-off. The 20-year-old represented Wales at the Under-16 level earlier in his career.

He later switched to England’s youth system and made four appearances for the Under-21 side, most recently featuring in November.

That involvement does not yet tie him permanently to England at the senior level. Wales are now exploring the possibility of convincing the defender to switch allegiances.

The approach arrives at a key moment for Craig Bellamy’s side as they prepare for a play-off semi-final against Bosnia in Cardiff on March 26. Injuries have created problems in defence for Wales.

Another Tottenham defender, Ben Davies, is unavailable after ankle surgery, while West Brom centre-back Chris Mepham is dealing with a hamstring injury.

That situation has increased interest in Phillips, who has impressed during his loan spell in the Championship.

The defender joined Tottenham Hotspur from Blackburn Rovers in August 2023. Despite being named on the bench eight times last season, he has not yet made his senior debut for Spurs.

However, this season, he has gained valuable experience. Phillips has played 31 Championship matches for Stoke City, who currently sit 15th in the table.

His performances have caught the attention of both international setups. England still view him as part of their future plans.

Phillips was included in Lee Carsley’s Under-21 squad for fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Slovakia last November.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur will have a decision to make on Igor Tudor after the humiliation they suffered at the hands of Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
