Valencia have been left devastated by tragic news from Indonesia. The club confirmed the death of one of their coaches following a boating accident during a family holiday.
The victim is Fernando Martin, who worked as coach of the Valencia CF Women B. Three of his children also lost their lives in the incident.
The accident took place while the family were on vacation in Bali. Martin’s wife, Andrea, and his 7-year-old daughter, Mar, were rescued.
Valencia released an official statement on Saturday confirming the tragedy. The club said (via RMC Sport):
“Valencia CF is deeply saddened by the passing of Fernando Martin, coach of the Valencia CF Women’s B Team, and three of his children in a tragic boating accident in Indonesia, as confirmed by local authorities. The Club wishes to express its support and condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Valencia CF, the Valencia CF Women’s Team, and the VCF Academy during this difficult time.”
Real Madrid also expressed condolences through their official statement which said:
“Real Madrid C. F., its president and Board of Directors are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Fernando Martín, Valencia C. F. Women’s B coach, and three of his children, in the tragic boat accident in Indonesia.
“Real Madrid wishes to express its horror, and extends its condolences and deepest affection to his wife, Andrea, and his daughter, Mar, at this incredibly difficult time.
“Likewise, we send our condolences to all of his family and loved ones, and the whole Valencia family.
Fernando Martín has passed away at 44 years of age, alongside his children, aged 12, 10 and 9. May they rest in peace.”
Martin was 44 years old. He had been in charge of the women’s B team since the start of the current season. The team competes in Spain’s third division.
According to Jakarta Globe, the tourist boat was carrying eleven people when it sank near Komodo National Park, close to Padar Island. Seven passengers were rescued.
Local reports state that the investigation is still at an early stage. However, Superdeporte reported that engine failure combined with rough sea conditions is the leading theory.
Valencia, the Spanish football community, and supporters have since paid tribute to Martin and his family.
