Wayne Rooney has revealed his highest wage at Manchester United, which has left Gary Neville and others speechless.
Manchester United have a knack for paying high salaries to their players. However, during the era of Sir Alex Ferguson, this was not the case.
However, since Ed Woodward joined as the CEO at United, things started to fall apart. The investment banker started paying high salaries to bring players in.
Soon after that, it became the norm at United. Previously, players used to come to Manchester United because they wanted to win trophies.
Lately, it has been the opposite. Players are coming here in the hope of winning trophies. But they know that they will be earning lots of money after signing for United.
Also, under Woodward, United have built a reputation in the transfer market as a club that overpays to sign players.
That is why clubs and players alike demand crazy money from United. Also, they know that United might pay that amount out of desperation.
Signing Casemiro from Real Madrid was a prime example of that desperation from Manchester United. United paid £70 million to Madrid for a 30-year-old.
Now, what made Casemiro sign for United? Was it the United pull? For a multi-time Champions League winner, leaving Real Madrid for United was all about money.
United were ready to pay £375k per week to Casemiro. But it is not like United never paid huge money to their players during Sir Alex Ferguson’s era.
On The Overlap, Gary Neville asked Wayne Rooney to reveal his biggest contract, and Rooney’s answer shocked everyone.
Neville revealed that he got paid around £1.75 million during 2010/11 when he was the captain at United. However, Rooney gave a figure that is more than 10 times Neville’s.
Rooney was on a £17 million per year contract at United, which was his biggest contract. This revelation made Roy Keane comment, “I feel underpaid now…”
