Wolfsburg have seen better days.
Once competing at the top end of the German Bundesliga, the club are currently looking to make their way back to the top flight after suffering relegation last season.
Having played six games so far, they have won three, drawn two and lost one as they sit fourth in the 2. Bundesliga table.
While it’s early days, the club will have high hopes of securing an immediate return to the Bundesliga.
One of the players who was meant to help them achieve that was former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen.
Eriksen joined the German club in 2025 on a two-year deal after leaving Old Trafford on a free transfer.
One of Denmark’s greatest ever players, the midfielder went on to make 34 appearances for Wolfsburg across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing 10 assists.
But football understandably took a back seat during the summer when Eriksen collapsed while playing for Denmark in a friendly against Ukraine.
The match was abandoned after the 34-year-old briefly lost consciousness, although he was able to walk from the pitch before being taken to hospital for further examinations.
It was an understandably concerning sight given Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest while representing Denmark at Euro 2020 in 2021 and was subsequently fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD).
However, Eriksen later stressed that the two incidents were different, explaining that his ICD had done exactly what it was designed to do when it activated during the Ukraine game.
Wolfsburg subsequently announced in July that Eriksen would undertake an individual rehabilitation programme in his native Denmark, with the club remaining in regular contact with the player and his doctors.
Now, almost four months on from that worrying incident, a decision has been made over his immediate future.
Wolfsburg have officially confirmed that the club and Christian Eriksen have mutually agreed to terminate his contract with immediate effect.
His deal had originally been due to run until June 30, 2027, but Wolfsburg sporting director Dieter Hecking stated that the club wanted Eriksen himself to determine what happened next.
According to Hecking, the 34-year-old requested the termination of his contract and Wolfsburg agreed to his wishes given the circumstances.
Eriksen has also now spoken about the decision, explaining that being close to his family in Denmark is his priority at the moment.
“Im Moment ist es für mich wichtig, nah bei meiner Familie in Dänemark zu sein,” Eriksen said in Wolfsburg’s statement, before thanking the club and those who supported him during his time in Germany.
The decision means Eriksen is now a free agent and his next move remains unclear.
Crucially, neither Eriksen nor Wolfsburg have announced that the midfielder is retiring from professional football.
His departure does, however, bring his time in Germany to an end after just over a year and leaves the former Manchester United midfielder free to decide what comes next.
For now, Eriksen has made clear that his priority is being close to his family in Denmark following an incredibly difficult few months.
