Manchester United have endured a difficult start to the new Premier League season under permanent head coach Michael Carrick.
United finished their European-based preseason campaign with a 4-2 defeat against AC Milan in Poland after producing mixed results.
They had previously beaten Rosenborg 5-0 before securing the Snapdragon Cup with a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid.
However, United started their Premier League campaign with a disappointing 2-0 defeat away against newly promoted Hull City.
The defeat highlighted their defensive struggles, with Lisandro Martinez among the key starters unavailable because of the pre-match injury crisis.
United have already focused heavily on rebuilding their midfield during the summer transfer window following several high-profile departures.
Andrey Santos arrived from Chelsea for £50 million, while United also paid Aston Villa £35 million to sign Youri Tielemans.
Meanwhile, the club are close to finalising a £70 million agreement with Brighton for Carlos Baleba before the September deadline.
United have also initiated contact with Barcelona regarding Alejandro Balde as they attempt to strengthen their defensive options.
However, there could now be another defensive departure from Old Trafford before the summer transfer window closes.
According to CaughtOffside, AC Milan are considering signing Noussair Mazraoui as they assess their defensive options before the deadline.
Milan manager Ruben Amorim already knows Mazraoui from their time together at Manchester United and remains an admirer.
However, Manchester United are under no contractual pressure to sanction Mazraoui’s departure before the transfer window closes.
He joined United from Bayern Munich in August 2024, while his current contract at Old Trafford runs until 2028.
Therefore, United remain in a strong negotiating position if AC Milan decide to make a late move for Mazraoui.
