Andre Onana set to leave Manchester United

Some goalkeepers arrive at a club with everything ahead of them.

For Andre Onana, it never quite came together at Old Trafford.

And now, Manchester United are moving on, sending him back to Turkey for a second loan spell at the club that took him last season.

Andre Onana set to rejoin Trabzonspor on loan as Manchester United confirm departure

According to Fabrizio Romano, a verbal agreement has been reached between Manchester United and Trabzonspor for Onana to return to the Turkish club on loan.

With the Cameroonian goalkeeper not part of Michael Carrick’s plans for the upcoming season.

The clarity of United’s position on Onana has been building all summer.

Senne Lammens was signed last January and immediately established himself as the club’s first-choice.

A direct, confident shot-stopper who has taken the number-one shirt without any of the uncertainty that plagued Onana’s tenure at Old Trafford.

With Lammens firmly in place, there is simply no pathway back for Onana.

The £47 million investment from 2023 never delivered what Manchester United needed.

Costly errors in high-profile matches.

Confidence that visibly fluctuated.

And a relationship with the fanbase that turned from excitement to frustration with uncomfortable speed.

However, his loan spell at Trabzonspor last season provided a reset of sorts.

Confidence partially rebuilt in an environment that asked less of him than the Premier League had.

The Turkish club appreciated what they got.

Enough to come back for more.

Onana’s contract runs until 2028.

The question of what happens when this loan expires will be answered eventually.

For now, the answer is Turkey.

Again.
