Arsenal entered the summer transfer window looking to build on their Premier League triumph and strengthen a squad that fell just short in Europe.
The Gunners have already strengthened several areas of the squad this summer. Christos Tzolis, Piero Hincapie and Illan Meslier have all arrived at the club.
However, despite those additions, defensive depth has quickly become a growing concern at the Emirates Stadium.
Injuries caused Arsenal significant problems throughout the 2025-26 season, with several senior defenders spending time on the sidelines at various stages of the campaign.
Those concerns have now intensified following developments involving one of the club’s most important players.
After France’s World Cup exit against Spain, William Saliba admitted that he “can’t take it anymore” as he continues to struggle with a serious back issue.
So, Saliba’s injury could now alter Arsenal’s transfer plans. According to Football Insider, the Gunners are considering a move for Maxence Lacroix despite Chelsea’s interest.
The report claims that the France international had appeared destined for Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea identifying him as a leading defensive target this summer.
However, Arsenal’s need for another centre-back could change the picture significantly over the coming weeks.
Saliba is reportedly facing surgery. So, he could miss months rather than weeks, potentially forcing Arsenal to alter their transfer plans before the season begins.
Chelsea are expected to face competition as a result, despite previously appearing to be in a one-club race for the defender.
Crystal Palace could be prepared to accept offers in the region of £60 million for the 26-year-old.
Lacroix also arrives with an impressive injury record at a time when availability has become a major issue for Arsenal.
The defender did not miss a single match through injury following his move to Crystal Palace in 2024. And he was absent for only a handful of games during his time at Wolfsburg.
Now, Chelsea are already pushing for a deal, and Arsenal’s needs are increasing as well. So, a transfer battle could soon emerge for the France international.
