Arsenal continue to strengthen after winning the Premier League title and ending their 22-year wait for domestic glory.
Mikel Arteta now wants further defensive reinforcement before the summer transfer window closes.
The Gunners have already invested heavily in their squad. Bruno Guimaraes arrived from Newcastle United, while Christos Tzolis strengthened their attacking options.
Arsenal have also added several players across midfield and defence. However, injuries have created fresh concerns at the back.
William Saliba currently faces an indefinite spell out because of back problems. Jurrien Timber is also dealing with chronic groin issues that could restrict his availability.
Arsenal have therefore searched for a versatile defender who can operate centrally and at right-back. Arteta particularly values players who can perform several defensive roles within his system.
According to SPORT, Arsenal have shown interest in signing Barcelona defender Jules Kounde and are closely monitoring his situation.
Arteta reportedly admires the France international and believes his versatility would suit Arsenal perfectly.
Barcelona could consider a major offer because they want to reshape their defence and generate additional salary space.
However, Kounde recently renewed his contract until 2030 and currently appears keen to remain at the club.
The defender will hold talks with Hansi Flick about his position. SPORT reports that Kounde lost some prominence last season, while Flick could start Eric Garcia in his position.
Arsenal had previously identified Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa as their priority target. However, Villa are demanding more than €75 million, which Arsenal consider too expensive.
That valuation has increased Kounde’s appeal as an alternative. Barcelona could accept a substantial proposal if the player also becomes open to leaving.
Nevertheless, Arsenal cannot progress significantly without Kounde changing his stance.
The defender currently wants to stay, leaving Arteta’s side waiting for developments before deciding whether to make a serious move.
