Some signings feel like they’ve already happened long before they’re officially announced.
You just get a sense.
It feels right, in a way.
And now, it’s finally official.
Arsenal have made their first signing of the summer,
With the deal being in the works for months.
Piero Hincapie confirmed as Arsenal’s first summer signing as £45m Leverkusen option triggered
According to The Athletic, Arsenal are set to exercise their option to sign Hincapie permanently from Bayer Leverkusen at a cost of around £45 million, completing a deal that was planned from the moment the Ecuador international arrived at the Emirates on loan last summer.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed the full picture in characteristically direct terms.
“Piero Hincapie will be the first signing for Arsenal in summer 2026. If you remember with David Raya and Brentford, Arsenal did something similar a few years ago.”
The comparison is eerily uncanny.
Arsenal signed Raya on loan from Brentford before triggering the buy option the following summer once they’d seen exactly what they had.
The Hincapie deal follows the same template.
A structurally clever approach that allows the club to assess a player fully before committing the permanent fee.
Hincapie contributed 25 Premier League appearances during Arsenal’s title-winning campaign.
Settling quickly and performing with the kind of composure and aggression that the Gunners have long demanded from their central defenders.
His Champions League experience, accumulated during two elite seasons at Bayer Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso, made the loan an attractive proposition from the very beginning.
Although Barcelona had Hincapie on their defensive shortlist, Arsenal have now made that question entirely disappear.
The option is being triggered.
And the Ecuadorian international is a permanent Arsenal player, on a five-year-deal.
And with Morgan Rogers and further additions still on the agenda for this summer, the Hincapie deal is simply the first domino falling in what Mikel Arteta has made clear will be a summer of genuine, substantial ambition.
