Some players become so central to a club’s identity that the idea of them leaving stops feeling like a transfer story.
Bruno Fernandes at Manchester United is one of those situations.
And this week, the club have drawn the clearest line they possibly could around their captain.
Manchester United say Bruno Fernandes is not for sale
According to The Sun, Manchester United have moved to banish any remaining uncertainty around Fernandes’ future, with club decision-makers reaching out directly to stress that they do not want him to leave under any circumstances this summer.
INEOS have made it clear.
Fernandes is the centrepiece of whatever comes next at Old Trafford, and they have no intention of allowing that to change.
The reassurance follows a period in which the situation was genuinely uncertain.
Fernandes admitted in December that he felt “hurt” by the club’s apparent willingness to listen to approaches for him.
Al-Hilal came with serious money last summer. Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have both registered interest.
Saudi Arabia remains a realistic destination if he were to leave.
But the direction of travel at Manchester United has shifted significantly since Michael Carrick took interim charge in January.
And at the heart of all of it, Fernandes.
His numbers this season are extraordinary.
Eight goals and 18 assists in 30 appearances, already surpassing the club’s single-season assist record previously held by David Beckham, and closing in on the all-time record for assists in a single English top-flight campaign.
He’s the runaway favourite for Premier League Player of the Season.
His contract runs until 2027, with the club holding an option for a further year.
But with Champions League football on the horizon and a club that has now publicly shown it values him above everything else, the appeal of staying has never been stronger.
Fernandes himself wants to make a final decision after the World Cup.
Manchester United would ideally have an indication sooner.
But the message from the club’s hierarchy is already out there.
He’s not for sale.
