Chelsea have already invested heavily this summer, but Xabi Alonso still wants more experience in attack.
The Blues finished 10th in the Premier League last season despite winning the FIFA Club World Cup. Therefore, Alonso has started reshaping the squad ahead of his first full campaign.
Chelsea broke the British transfer record to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117M. They also strengthened the defence by completing a £51-52M deal for Maxence Lacroix.
Meanwhile, Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda have also arrived. However, the club have continued exploring further additions before the transfer window closes.
Chelsea currently have several senior strikers in their squad. Joao Pedro remains untouchable, while Emmanuel Emegha, Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu provide further options.
However, the club are also considering sales and loan departures to reduce their numbers. According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are interested in signing Brighton striker Danny Welbeck.
The 35-year-old has emerged as a contender to join Alonso’s squad after another excellent Premier League campaign.
Welbeck scored 13 league goals in 37 appearances last season. Moreover, that return helped him become Brighton’s all-time leading Premier League scorer.
The former Manchester United striker has now scored 23 Premier League goals across the last two seasons.
Welbeck started his career at Old Trafford after progressing through Manchester United’s academy. He scored 29 goals in 142 senior appearances before leaving the club.
He also won the Premier League, League Cup and FIFA Club World Cup during his time in Manchester. Manchester United explored the possibility of bringing Welbeck back to Old Trafford.
However, Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly rejected the idea of offering him a multi-year contract because of his age.
Welbeck recently triggered a one-year extension with Brighton, keeping him under contract until 2027.
Chelsea have not yet completed a deal, but Alonso is keen to add his leadership and proven Premier League quality.
