David Ornstein has dropped a major Manchester United bombshell. The renowned journalist has updated that Manchester United are closing in on their first signing of the summer.
The club wanted a replacement for Casemiro following the Brazilian’s departure. Michael Carrick also pushed for more energy and balance in the middle of the pitch before the team’s return to the Champions League.
Several midfielders appeared on Manchester United’s shortlist over recent months. However, the club have now reached an agreement for the player they wanted most.
According to David Ornstein from The Athletic, Manchester United have agreed a deal with Atalanta to sign midfielder Ederson.
The report states that United will pay a fixed fee of €40.5 million alongside an additional €4.5 million in possible add-ons.
Ederson could complete a medical in early July before signing a contract running until 2030 with the option of an extra year.
The Brazilian midfielder becomes Manchester United’s first signing of the Michael Carrick era at Old Trafford. Ederson made 180 appearances for Atalanta after joining the Italian side in 2022.
The report also claims Ederson’s contract situation helped facilitate the move because his current deal expires in 2027. Manchester United will now look to add at least one more midfielder before the transfer window closes.
The Red Devils are already targeting the likes of Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes.
