David Ornstein drops more Arsenal transfer news

Arsenal focused heavily on their defence after injuries created problems before the new Premier League campaign.

Arsenal have continued their aggressive summer recruitment after winning the Premier League title last season.

The Gunners also reached the Champions League final before losing to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.

Arsenal responded by strengthening several areas of their squad ahead of their title defence this season.

Bruno Guimaraes arrived from Newcastle United for £75 million to add further quality to Arteta’s midfield.

The club also signed Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge and brought Illan Meslier in as a free agent.

Arsenal then focused heavily on their defence after injuries created problems before the new Premier League campaign.

William Saliba suffered a back injury, while Jurrien Timber has also struggled with his fitness.

Those problems encouraged Arsenal to pursue another experienced defender who could provide immediate cover across the back line.

David Ornstein of The Athletic has now revealed that Arsenal have completed the signing of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa.

The Premier League champions will pay Villa £51 million upfront, with another £4 million available through potential add-ons.

Konsa has signed a four-year contract at the Emirates Stadium, while Arsenal also hold an option for another season.

The 28-year-old gives Arteta additional flexibility because he can operate at centre-back and right-back.

Konsa brings considerable Premier League experience after making 286 appearances for Aston Villa following his arrival from Brentford in 2019.

He also featured heavily for England during the World Cup, starting every match before their semi-final defeat against Argentina. The move continues a major summer of change at Villa Park.

Morgan Rogers joined Chelsea, Lucas Digne returned to Paris Saint-Germain and Youri Tielemans moved to Manchester United.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have added another proven Premier League player as they prepare to defend their domestic title.

Konsa could immediately help Arteta manage Saliba’s absence while also strengthening competition across the defensive line.

His arrival gives Arsenal another senior option ahead of their opening Premier League fixture against newly-promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium.
