Newcastle United continue to work on strengthening their squad ahead of the new season. Eddie Howe wants more quality in attack as the Magpies prepare for another demanding campaign.
The club have already identified several targets across Europe. Now, Newcastle appear close to winning the race for one of Spain’s most exciting young wingers.
Reports claim the winger has chosen Newcastle despite interest from Manchester United, Liverpool and Barcelona.
According to AS, the Magpies are on the verge of signing Victor Munoz from Osasuna. The former Real Madrid player has enjoyed an impressive campaign with Osasuna last season.
The Spain international featured 36 times in all competitions. He scored seven goals and provided five assists during the campaign. Newcastle have admired the 22-year-old for some time.
Manchester United and Liverpool both made enquiries about the player. Barcelona also explored the possibility of signing him. However, Munoz reportedly prioritised a move to St James’ Park.
The report states that regular playing time was the key factor behind his decision.
Newcastle offered the clearest pathway for consistent first-team football. As a result, the winger chose the Magpies ahead of several bigger clubs.
Munoz came through the ranks at Real Madrid before joining Osasuna last summer. Real Madrid reportedly had the opportunity to bring him back.
The Spanish giants also held a right of first refusal. However, they decided not to activate either option.
Instead, Real Madrid are expected to retain a buy-back clause as part of the agreement involving Osasuna, Newcastle and the player. The move is now said to be close to completion.
If the deal goes through, Newcastle will secure a player regarded as one of Spain’s brightest young attacking talents.
More importantly, they will have beaten Manchester United and Liverpool to his signature.
